Expected lifetime of the PRO model is 12 months with proper care:

  • Do not bite too strong for too long.
  • Rinse the reed with clean water and let dry after playing to prevent saliva plaque (mouthwash may also be used).
  • If you are a heavy user, we recommend you to rotate  between two reeds. 24 hours resting will fully rejuvenate the reed.

    I am amazed and pleased with the quality of the oboe reed. It has now become extremely difficult for an average listener to distinguish wood from plastic. For a player who knows the dynamic range and timbres of his oboe, there are still differences compared to the self-made mouthpiece. Small point of criticism: The note “c” is a bit unstable, but this can be compensated for with good ears and a good embouchure.
    Nevertheless, it is extremely practical and reassuring to always have a Silverstein reed in your case. Thanks for the development work!
    Now it will be very exciting to see how long the reed retains its properties. If this is also the case within a time frame of approx. 1 year, the Silverstein reed will be an ideal solution for all children and young people who want to learn to play the oboe. However, if the lifespan of a mouthpiece were to be significantly shorter, it would not be a financial gain.

    I am actually amazed by how wonderful the tone I get from this reed. The response is actually okay that I don’t feel that I need to scrape anything off the tip. The only concern I have is that the reed crows a B and sits overall flat. The upper register like A and B/B-flat can be hard to control. I find myself biting down a bit much or take in a lot more reed than I’m used to in order to get the pitch up. Because I have to hold such a tighter embouchure, I feel like this may wear out the reed faster than designed.

    The new Ambipoly oboe reeds feel very natural, and much closer to the rougher grain of cane than other synthetic reeds. After the break-in period, the reed was balanced and the crow stayed even. I would definitely recommend the reed for an upper-intermediate to professional player (if you can afford the investment!)

    Very responsive and actually exceeded my expectation. I have always been searching for a synthetic oboe reed in American scrape, and the Legere European scrape just doesn’t work for me. That reed is way too resistant to play on. That said, I do notice that some of the higher notes on your Ambipoly reed sounds a bit flatter than on a cane reed for me.
