Vincent Herring

“The ligature is excellent in helping to produce sound!”

Vincent is a saxophone virtuoso with a uniquely intense and vigorous musical voice. He is considered one of the premier saxophonists of his generation.

Vincent first toured Europe and the United States with Lionel Hampton’s big band in the early 1980’s. As he developed his musicianship working with Nat Adderley, a partnership blossomed that continued for nine years. Along the way he worked and/or recorded with Cedar Walton, Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Hayes, Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers, Horace Silver Quintet, Jack DeJohnette’s Special Edition, Larry Coryell, Steve Turre, The Mingus Big Band, Kenny Barron, Nancy Wilson, Dr. Billy Taylor, Carla Bley, and John Hicks.

Vincent has appeared as guest soloist with many artists and ensembles including Wynton Marsalis at Lincoln Center and John Faddis with the Carnegie Hall Big Band. While amassing these impressive credentials, Vincent continued to develop his own voice and style. Inspired by a collage of diverse musical influences, Vincent is also involved in Jazz education and is currently on the faculty of William Patterson University. He conducts master classes and jazz workshops at conservatories and universities around the world.

Current Projects

Vincent Herring & Joris Dudli’s Soul Jazz Alliance
This is a project started in 2013. It includes the vocals of Sachal Vasandani, Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Freddie Bryant on guitar, Jared Gold at the organ, Joris Dudli at the drums and me on saxophone. It is a project Joris and I plan to do for years. The grooves and melodies of this band are reminiscent of the music we grew up with. Look for us on tour in your area.
Vincent Herring Earth Jazz Agents
We are taking a break from Earth Jazz for a while. I receive several letters asking me when we will we be on tour again. Maybe 2016
The Cannonball Legacy Band with Louis Hayes
The name says it all. I love Cannonball and I love Louis Hayes. I love Nat Adderley! I worked and recorded with Nat for nine pleasurable years. After Nat died I never thought I would play his music again on a regular basis. Louis called me to play a tribute concert some years ago and the concert was magical and surprisingly fresh so we decided to start performing with this band. We have a spiritual musical connection that is special. Jeremy Pelt, trumpet; Rick Germanson, piano; Dezeron Douglas, bass.
Vincent Herring, Eric Alexander and Friendly Fire
Eric and I released two records on HighNote with this band. This is an classic saxophone battle with Eric, one of my favorite saxophone players! We try to do something every year. Alway a lot of fun and musically rewarding.
Vincent Herring Quartet
Vincent Herring alto and soprano saxophone, Mike LeDonne piano, David Williams bass and Lewis Nash at the drums. I have a book of music that I have developed over the years, a blend of originals written by me and the guys and additional songs from heroes like Cedar Walton, Kenny Barron, John Hicks and others. A magical musical experience.
