I am 70 yrs. old. My right thumb now has arthritis. I tried other plastic reeds with no luck. I tried Silverstein oboe reeds. I changed the staple to a lore gold. Then scraped the reed the same as my cane scrape. It leaked so I put Teflon tape from the back to bottom of staple. No leak. I play tested the reed great sound but not want I wanted so I scraped the corners, much improved. I took the spine out and made a divit which darkened the tone. Scale dead on after embouchure change. I’ve played both reeds after scraping them. Now I can continue to play my oboe in our church orchestra. I had retired from playing my oboe for 7 months. Thanks to Silverstein and the many years of reed scraping, I can continue to enjoy making beautiful music. I which you could hear my Ronald Dupin oboe playing Swan Lake on these 2 Silverstein reeds.

As a semi professional oboist I’ve made my own reeds, had professional oboists make reeds for me, bought high quality reeds from reputable retailers and most recently have been trying synthetic reeds. So, I think I have tried just about every route possible in pursuit of the best oboe reed for me! Quite difficult to get a Silverstein ambipoly reed in the UK at the minute but I managed to get an MS one a few weeks ago. An excellent sounding reed from the first play which required no adjusting at all. Super impressed. Especially in the key areas of response and pitch. I’ve ordered a medium this time to compare with the MS I already have. There is a backlog at the minute and I’ll have to wait a while before my order wings its merry way across the sea to the UK. I think the Silverstein ambipoly reed is an excellent product and I hope it proves to be a great success for the company. I had a small query regarding my order which was dealt with promptly and professionally by Jim Mayr in the Customer Services team. Go Silverstein!

This reed is absolutely awesome. I play the medium-hard reed. The reed is stable, well-tuned and rich in dynamics. I’m so happy I don’t need to build new reeds because this one is amazing just the way it is.
